A Larrikin Returns
Warren Fahey, the singer, writer, publisher and all-round promoter of Australian themed material, together with multi-instrumentalist, Marcus Holden, is due back in Newcastle on 6th April, to play as guest of the folk club, and for another very special reason.
As a young, folk-mad Activities Officer at Tighes Hill TAFE college, Warren acted as a conduit between the college and the emerging folk scene in Newcastle. He also helped establish the Purple Parrot Folk Club at the college in 1967. He arranged for the club to meet in a campus cellar known as “The Dungeon”, which, says Ron Brown, our President, you wouldn’t keep lawnmowers in these days. Warren spent two years in Newcastle, and as well as the folk club he also ran the Wild Colonials Weekends.
In the meantime Warren has led a life full of achievement, writing about, and performing Australian folk songs for well over 40 years. He also established the highly successful record label ‘Larrikin Records’ with a shop outlet in Paddington. (gone now).
He has received numerous gongs but prefers to say he is a “graduate of the Dingo University”. He has an extensive repertoire and accompanies himself on an English concertina. Warren will also be joined by multi-instrumentalist, Marcus Holden.
There’s no doubt that the folk club was a ‘Diamond in the Rough’ in those days. It is now a more polished jewel in the city’s crown. Even though run by volunteers it has served folk music and dance for 40 years. website
